It’s hard to be around our kids all the time. Their needs and messes and noise are constantly weighing on us. It can be easy to lose ourselves to the demands of motherhood. To let stress take over. To be the yelling, tantruming mom we swore we’d never be.

I remember the darkness.

The whole family had gathered around the dining room table. It was a typical holiday meal overflowing with food and fun.

But to me their mirth was raucous laughter. Their conversation was frivolous and obnoxious. Their jokes were abhorrent.

It was hard for me to explain all the feelings I felt.
