I look down at my sink perpetually filled with dishes, and I feel overwhelmed.
I look down at my floor, currently covered in crumbs, and I feel tired.
I look down at my phone, too often lit with news of the latest hate story, Church scandal, and political turmoil, and I feel dejected.
Some days, the cross of life weighs heavy.
This morning, I woke up with a start at 5am, remembering that it’s trash day. Our garbage truck shows up at our curb long before daylight, and I had forgotten to take our cans out yesterday.
So I threw on some clothes, stomped into my boots, and lugged those heavy bins down the gravelly driveway in the darkness.
As I turned back to my house, the light of the moon caught my eye in the dark morning. I turned my gaze upwards toward the sky. The night was clear and the stars were shining brightly, too.
Those small points of light were such a consolation in the dark. I stood there for a few minutes, turning round, staring up, and with each new star in sight, praising the Lord out loud, with the prayer of the Psalmist on my lips.
Praise the Lord, moon and stars, for his love endures forever.
As I did, I felt the weight of the darkness begin to lift.
I clung to the moment.
When I finally walked back into my house, out of the cold, I was determined to spend the day looking up.
I want to look up from the darkness that encroaches, and see the points of light in my life.
When I encounter the neverending chores, the chaos of life with kids, the turmoil of the world around me, I will not let it wear me out, weigh me down. I will not give into dejection and despair.
I will look up.
I will look for the small blessings and joys that light up my life.
Praise the Lord, dishes and crumbs, for his love endures forever.
Praise the Lord, laundry mountain, for his love endures forever.
Praise the Lord, you stinky diapers, for his love endures forever.
Praise the Lord, Facebook and Instagram, for his love endures forever.
The Lord is my light in the darkness. He is the way, the truth, and the life. I will take up my cross with my eyes on Christ.
My hope is in the Lord who made heaven and earth.
Praise him today, for his love endures forever.
