Mary: the perfect mother of God the Son

Mary is the perfect mother of God the Son.

Hail Mary mother of God the Son, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.  Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

Mary teaches me to have perfect love for You, Jesus, the Messiah, the Redeemer.

She first gave herself to love you totally with a vow of virginity. She didn’t let any other person come first in her life, so when the Messiah came she was ready to serve You alone. When the angel Gabriel appeared to announce Your Incarnation, Mary’s faith in Your ability to save mankind from our sins made her willing to believe the impossible. She, a virgin, would bear a Son.

She accepted this without hesitation.

By her great love for You, Mary shows me how I should love You, Jesus. I should love You to the point of believing the impossible. My weaknesses, my sins, my failings, my distractedness, laziness and self-centeredness don’t stop Your work of salvation. The only thing that holds me back is my fear, my refusal to believe You got this.

Like Mary said yes to a virgin birth, give me the grace to say yes to the virtues You wish to grow in my life.  Let me say yes to Your desire to make me a saint, no matter how silly or far-fetched it seems.

You are the Redeemer.  You set sinners free.

Nothing is impossible for You.

Mary teaches me to love You for Your own sake.  Even though she was sinless from conception, she supported and aided salvation History. She loved You, the Redeemer, so much that she accepted unimaginable sufferings.   Not because she personally needed Your death on the cross to save her from her sins (she didn’t), but because for Your sake, she loved all of us, her children, who need You to save us from our sins.

She loved You for who You are, even when what she got out of Your role as Redeemer was a broken heart.

When You performed Your first miracle at Cana, You warned Mary of the pain Your public ministry would cause her when You left her side. But she joyfully hastened Your mission, regardless of the sorrow it would cause her then and three years later at Your crucifixion and death.

Teach me, like Mary, to love the salvation of souls more than my own comfort zone. Teach me to place such a high value on the fruits of Your suffering and death that my own small sorrows seem as nothing. Teach me to desire my own salvation and that of others more than anything else in the world – if only because that’s what You desire above all else.

Nothing matters to You more than to see souls return to you, glorify you, love You. Mary knew Heaven rejoices more over the return of one lost sinner than for 99 faithful.  By her example, teach me to do the same.

Like Mary, let me love You so much my desires align with Yours.

Hail Mary, mother of God the Son, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Through the gift of her motherhood, Mary loved You as her Son.  If I want to love You like Mary, I need to love You as a mother.

I can do this by seeing Your image in my children.  By their Baptism, You entered their lives. In their innocence, they reflect Your innocence, Lamb of God. I must see You in them, and relish the opportunity to Love You, Christ, in my children.

Mary taught You as a child.  She taught You of goodness, truth and beauty.  She taught You with patience, affection, and gentleness.

I too, like Mary, can give You the consolation of my patience, affection, and gentleness.  Not by going out into the world to look for the unfortunate to help, but by mothering, teaching, guiding my own children with patience, gentleness, and affection.  I can do unto You, in imitation of Mary, by doing unto the least of these, my children.

Even in discipline, I can make my motherhood a prayer.  An act of love for You. My children are so young, so innocent. Their tears, their hurt, their frustration, even their misbehavior is an invitation to reach out to You, Jesus, in Your times of human hurt, anger, frustration and pain.

In the Garden, You felt the pain of all the sins of mankind. My children feel the pain of concupiscence. They don’t always know the right thing to do, or have the self-control to do it.  And so they hurt themselves and others. By taking a moment to see You in my child, I can imagine the care with which Mary attended to Your hurts.  Your skinned knees, Your sorrows, every moment of humiliation and suffering during the crucifixion.

Hail Mary, mother of God the Son… pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.  Tweet this.

In my mothering, everything can become a prayer.

I can offer You a consolation with every band-aid I give my child.  I can provide relief for Your suffering in the face of so many sins by modeling forgiveness.  Like Mary at the fourth station, I can offer You my presence, my love, when I hug my sad child.

My Jesus, never let me trivialize the sufferings of my children.

They’re Your sufferings too. Never let me take my vocation as mother lightly, because through it I’m blessed with the opportunity to imitate Mary’s perfect motherly love for You, Jesus.

Mary, Mother of God the Son, teach me by Your perfect example how to love Jesus as You loved Him – with a perfect motherly love.

My Jesus, help me to learn from Mary how to love You for who You are.

Let me love You selflessly, for Your sake, and not solely for any benefit I may reap from love of You. Help me also to love You with a motherly love.  To be conscious of Your sufferings, of Your hunger for my love.  Help me love You intentionally through my vocation, and offer every act as a gift of Love to You.

Jesus, second Person of the most Holy Trinity, I love You! Help me love You more and more. Amen.
